Under the Harvest Moon

If you look closely at the Harvest Moon, some say you can see a bunny.

Not just any rabbit, but the daltokki (달토끼) - the Korean moon rabbit, carefully pounding rice cakes beneath the glow of the full moon.

On these crisp autumn evenings, the moon feels almost close enough to touch. Someone points, and soon everyone is looking up, tracing subtle shadows across its surface. There are the ears. Or maybe that's a paw. Either way, high above us, the daltokki works away.

At least, that's how the story goes.

Then comes Chuseok (추석), Korea's autumn harvest festival, arriving with the year's brightest full moon and the gathering of the autumn harvest.

It is a time to give thanks for the season's bounty, honour ancestors and gather around a table with family and friends - a special moment to appreciate the care and work that often goes unseen behind every dish set before us.

So often, the things we look forward to most are the smallest. A favourite dish made just once a year. The familiar hum of a busy kitchen. An extra chair squeezed around the table. The comfort of knowing exactly how something will taste before you've taken the first bite. Perhaps that's why traditions endure - not because they stay rigid, but because they return to us in gentle, familiar ways.
