Our October TBR: American Hagwon by Min Jin Lee
There are some books you wait a long time for. For us at TOKKIA, American Hagwon has been at the top of that list.
From the moment Min Jin Lee’s new novel was announced, it became a regular topic of conversation. Pre-orders were placed almost immediately, and we’ve been counting down the days to its release ever since.
For our founder, Sooji, Min Jin Lee’s work has always held a special place. Free Food for Millionaires is a long-time favourite, and Pachinko resonated deeply - not just as a brilliant story, but for how beautifully it introduced Korean history, family, and the global diaspora to readers worldwide. Naturally, news of a new book was cause for celebration.
When the opportunity came to bring American Hagwon to TOKKIA, it felt like a natural meeting of two things we care deeply about: Korean culture and powerful storytelling. After months of eager anticipation, being able to share it with our community as part of its official launch makes it all the more special.

Now, the wait is over, and we are finally diving in.
“Growing up in Korea, the belief that happiness was directly tied to getting a good education was never questioned,” Sooji says upon starting her read. “Reading about the impact of this belief on everyday life, families, and society as a whole really hits home.”
12-25 October, American Hagwon will be at TOKKIA Soho alongside the American Hagwon Matcha Latte, our special apple cinnamon matcha. A copy of the book will also be available to borrow and read in-store.
On 12 October, the first five people to order the American Hagwon Matcha Latte will receive a complimentary copy of the book to take home. American Hagwon bookmarks and other book goodies from 4th Estate will also be available throughout the collaboration.
We’re looking forward to having you stop by TOKKIA Soho to try the exclusive special and settle in with the book for a few chapters. Whether you already have your eye on the new launch or simply looking for somewhere in London to spend an afternoon reading, we hope you’ll make a little time for American Hagwon - and perhaps leave with a new addition to your TBR list.
